The Brain - Chapter 3 - 27/08/2025

Chapter 3 of The Brain by David Eagleman was an excellent chapter because it brushed upon a question I find very intruiging: do we have free will? In the chapter, Eagleman reasoned that all decisions we make are the product of our entire life experience; you carry all your memories with you and they dictate your decisions. I was very pleased to learn that he believes this because it's a stance I've held for many years. I believe that if you were to run time backwards 100 times, you'd make the same decisions each and every time. Because if all factors are the same at the start point, why should the result be any different at the end point?

I also enjoyed the topic on the subconscious and how much of our daily lives we hand over to it. In particular, I enjoyed the section where he talked about a man who had lost all sense of where his limbs were and had to rely purely on vision when performing motions with his body. It was a brilliant example to emphasise how much work goes on behind the scenes to coordinate basic tasks.

Finally, I was glad to see reference to Sigmund Freud - A name I am familiar with but someone I know very little about. Anyone who's taken a brief glance across the Psychology shelf in any library has heard of Sigmund Freud or Freudian Psychology, so it was great to actually gain insight into his contributions to the field. I expect to learn a lot more about him on my upcoming Psychology course, as well as independently.
