The Brain - Chapter 1 - 26/08/2025

Today I started reading The Brain by David Eagleman in preparation for the beginning of my Psychology course next week. So far, I've found it to be a highly interesting, thought-provoking read. It's to the extent that I constantly find myself wondering off on trains of thought inspired by the exciting concepts I was reading about - which ironically makes the book quite difficult to follow.

The first chapter covered topics related to cognitive development, memory, and sense of self. My key take away is the distinction he mentioned between the level of development in newborn humans compared to other animals. I've read about certain animals being able to walk from birth, but the correlation between the level of brain development in newborns and their capacity to understand and adapt to surroundings over time is a new concept to me. Furthermore, the topic on memory and how suggestible our recollection of past experiences truly is was shocking and temporarily triggered a minor existential crisis as I questioned the validity of all my memories.

Overall, I've so far found this book to be highly valuable and a great introduction into the world of psychology. I look forward to reading the rest.
