A new era - 20/08/2025

AI music is on the rise, but it doesn't scare me. What scares me is that major streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc...) don't see it as something they need to address.

In a 2025 report, Spotify stated it doesn’t police the tools artists use — rather, the focus is on whether content is deceptive or infringes on rights. What this means is that as long as the music is "original", it is not in Spotify's interest to remove it from the platform. That includes fully AI generated songs - The Velvet Sundown, for a famous example.

Now, while The Velvet Sundown is fully transparent about their use of AI, labelling the project as "An ongoing artistic provocation designed to challenge the boundaries of authorship, identity, and the future of music itself in the age of AI", the issue lies in the tens thousands of other tracks that are starting to seep their way in to Discover Weekly or Algorithmic reccomendations.

However, I remain optimistic. People will always take authentically written and produced music over AI, we just need to give them a safe place to find it. This is why I have been theorising a new streaming platform - one that rigorously prevents AI content from being uploaded, one that encourages blatent imperfections in music and remains pure and human. This would be pre-emptive, of course, as the vast majority of popular music is still authentically produced. But for how long will it stay that way?

I hope to post more updates as I flesh out this idea more.
